Caring for Our Capacitiesby Tom Hansen, Lenexa, Kansas At some point about twenty years ago I became aware that I couldn't continue to keep eating whatever I wanted. I began to feel the effects of 30 years of unconscious eating, and my body rebelled in a major way. And so I began to try to deal with food cravings and tried to "eat better". But the definition of proper eating was never really clear, and kept changing every time I read something new about nutrition. The cravings were (are) difficult to control, and I knew at some level that it wasn't a matter of will - that it was the chemistry of my body that was controlling things. But for all the books I read and seminars I attended, I couldn't discover how to change my body chemistry and responses in a way that worked for me. Five years ago, when I first began to share Attunement and to try to live in the center of that sacred current, my view of many things changed. One of the changes was that I began to want to take better care of my capacities in a new way-because that directly affected my ability to perceive and allowed me to do this work more effectively, and because I became aware that this type of caring is a form of thanksgiving, and another form of self-attunement. Larry Johansen recently presented a weekend seminar on nutrition and stress management in the context of "caring for our capacities" and it resonated with me in a profound way. Besides being an Attunement Master/Teacher, Larry has a tremendous technical background in nutrition and biochemistry. The "chemistry" made sense to me in a way that few other concepts have over the years (I'm more interested in the technical aspects of nutrition than most people). Beyond that, I like the fact that it can be as simple or as complicated as I am able to make it on any given day. And Larry reinforced the idea that proper nutrition is a form of stress management in itself. Emotional and mental stress is only part of the picture, and the physical stress that results from improper eating and out of control insulin levels is a major factor in our overall health and feelings of well being. Larry gave us some great tools that are immediately available to manage our diet, manage our stress, and care for our capacities in a very direct way. Thanks, Larry!
